New Technology

A study that I found super interesting involving technology and communication is a program that is going on at Michigan State University. The new program involves artificial intelligence with student interaction. Students from MSU are now able to take online classes and still be involved in everyday class interaction. With artificial intelligence students can stay at home while using a robot to still look around the class and participate. The idea of doing this is to allow students to feel as if they are really involved in the class. These robots have cameras attached to them as well as microphones allowing students to look around the room and communicate with the students and professors around them. This study has found that students involved in the new program have done better in their classes over the original video broadcast way of teaching the class. The program expects that in the near future 80% of students will be participating in this program rather then going to class every day.

I found this so interesting; it really made me think about our future and the possibility of face-to-face communication decreasing. I feel as if instead of people having to travel all over the world to communicate with business partners they will all have artificial intelligence. This will allow them to speak with other business professionals in a somewhat personal level. In my opinion I think this could be a really great idea. But on the contrary I truly feel that face-to-face communication is so important, it gives you more of a personal experience. I know that the idea of having these robots is a more personal way instead of a phone call or a video chat. But it really takes away the personal experience of talking with one another.

Noah Zandian, who wrote an article talked about how Artificial intelligence is actually helping the world in silence. In other words Noah talked about how many people are scared of the thought of artificial intelligence taking over the world. But he actually talked about how artificial intelligence is in our everyday lives. For example when your furnace adjusts the temperature to help you save money, or when you are on Google and it pulls up words for you. Or even when you get on your phone to ask Siri a question. These are all forms of artificial intelligence that are in our everyday lives these things just help make our lives a little bit easier. One part of the article that I found extremely fascinating was how they were now using AI to help professional communicate in a better way. They are using this technology to measure the level of engagement with crowds of people. They have started using this technology to from data that will help business leaders know when to say certain things that will catch the audience’s attention. I think this is so cool that there is technology that is able to measure crowds of people and give you data that will better help your self.

In closing I just want to say I believe that there are good sides and bad sides to using artificial intelligence. But I do feel we are moving in a direction that will help the human race as a whole. Not to mention helps us in a professional communication level.

Social Media Case

Chandler Olson
10/3/2017

One of our nations biggest sporting events has been thrown through a loop the past couple weeks. As many football players have been tanking a knee, sitting, and holding their fist in the air or even staying inside during the national anthem. The reason for these actions is to raise awareness to social inequality, as well to stand against the police hurting the blacks. President Donald Trump posted on twitter September 30, 2017 “Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem. Respect our Flag and our Country!” This tweet has caused a lot of controversy through out the NFL and the people’s view of our president.
Many people have gone against Trump as they feel that he should be supporting them in a way of social inequality. Instead of trying to blame those players who are standing up for what they believe in. Later that week during a speech Trump said and I quote “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired” for any football player who doesn’t stand for the national anthem. To state my own opinion I think that Trump is handling this in a wrong manner. I feel that he should be addressing the real issue of blacks against the police force. Many football players have started to go further against Trump by joining forces with there teammates. Last Sunday more than 100 football players took a knee during the national anthem to show there position on the subject. Donald trumps speaker of the house Paul Ryan spoke out on the controversy saying that he truly believes that our president’s heart is in the right place by standing up for our country and the anthem that is supposed to represent our unity as one.

Just as trump has been dealing with the NFL there have been some current issues with the way Trump is handling the NBA. A few weeks ago on September 23, 2017 Trump tweeted “Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!”  This tweet was directed at Stephen Curry a two time MVP of the NBA, Curry who is currently a Golden State Warriors basketball player. Curry was undecided on whether or not he would accept the invitation to the white house. Sadly enough as Curry was deciding if he would join his team in a trip to the white house. He received a tweet from the president saying that his invitation was withdrawn. When the tweet was first posted it was unclear on whether or not the invitation was withdrawn from just Curry or the whole team. The team said that Trump “made it very clear that we are not invited”. I feel that this is very sad that trump has made such a big impact on such an amazing team. The team has decided that they are still going to take a trip to Washington D.C. in February in order to highlight issues with diversity and inclusiveness. I truly respect that the warriors as a team are willing to join together and stand for what they believe in. Curry said in a press conference that he hopes that this will open people’s eyes to see as the rest of us see.

Online Reputation

To: Gage Peterson

From: Chandler Olson

Subject: Your Online Reputation

September 26, 2017

An online reputation is very important now days for multiple reasons. A future employer or a client of yours may see how you hold your self in a business setting, but your online profile may show how you are out side of a business setting. As we have been assigned to see what we can find out about your online profile here is what you allow the public eye to see.

I began my search first by logging onto Facebook, and going to our class page. I made sure to spell your name correctly as I started typing your name instantly a profile with a picture of you pulled up, so I knew I had found the right Gage Peterson.

As I continued my search on you through Facebook I found out that you grew up in Morgan Utah, and graduated from Morgan High School. You have studied at Weber state and are now currently studying at Utah State. Also you have been working at Medway Medical from 2013 to current in the intake/collections department. Just from looking at your photos it seems like you are a very out doors person who loves there truck and has a huge passion for snowmobiling. I think it is very smart of you to have pictures of your hobbies that is very important for employers to see what you are passionate about out side of work.

After learning lots about you through Facebook I decided to continue my search through Google. I started first by going to Google images and typing your name in to see what kind of pictures would pull up. Of course this was not a very specific search so I didn’t find you at first. But the pictures that I did see were ones that had been posted to your Facebook. After realizing that pictures might not be the best way to find out information on you. I typed in your name and your hometown of Morgan, Utah. Here I found your LinkedIn profile this is always a great find for a future employer as this shows them that you have a professional side to your online profile. Here I saw that you have multiple connects with some high up people which is truly great. I also really liked how you gave a description of the job that you are currently involved in. This gives me a really good idea of what you would bring to the table at your future job.

I continued my search by typing in your name and then adding Instagram at the end of it. I found your account quite quickly again I saw allot of the same pictures as your Facebook which is a great thing. I say this because it shows that you are the same through out your social media accounts, which is very comforting. Lastly I tried to see if you had a twitter account, unfortunately I was unsuccessful in finding a twitter account that was linked to you.

In conclusion I just want to say that I was very impressed with your online profile. If I were to give you a letter grade you would receive an A. I say this because you have a strong online presence that presents your self very well. The pictures that you have posted and the information provided are very intriguing. It truly shows what you are passionate about and that you have the potential to be a great employee. If I were to make a suggestion to you about your online profile it would be just a little bit more information on your linked in account. Maybe more information about your previous work experience out side of Midway Medical, other then that I was very impressed by your online profile, keep up the good work.

Letter to Cousin

Dear Cousin,

It has been brought to my attention that you are not familiar with the subject matter of technical and professional communications. I am here today to help clear up any misunderstandings that you may have. First by going through technical communications and then finishing up with professional communications. My hope with this letter is to give you a brief and better understanding of technical and professional communications.

To start off we will cover the basics of Technical communication. Technical communication “is a means to convey scientific, engineering, or other technical information.” Basically stating that people of the technical communications field communicate on a technology based level. Whether that be through computer based writings, texts, emails Etc.. This type of communication is used more in a business setting dealing with more specialized topics or instructions. An easy way to think of it is instructions, for example when you buy a desk from Ikea, the instructions given to you is a perfect example of technical communication. Where there is still communication but it is not given to you in face-to-face communication.

Second we will cover the topic of Professional communication. In simple terms professional communication is used in a work place setting, meaning that written oral and visual communication is all used. I like to think of this almost as open communications where all types are used to communicate. In my opinion this is one of the most important ways that we as humans interact with one another. We all interact with each other in different ways and professional communications seems to be the dominant way of communication. Professional communication is said to be one of the most important skills successful people bring to the table. I bring this up to you, because I know that you are on a righteous path of success and I want you to learn all that you can to better your self. Professional communications is a way where people with power are able to take action and guide you to think and believe the way they do. For example sales men are very good in face-to-face professional communications. They are able to make you believe and be interested in what they have to sell.

In closing I just want to say that Technical Communication and Professional communication are very closely related. Professional is based more around the idea of strategy and the theory of learning and persuading. Technological communication is more in the work field where we as humans are not communication as much in person and we rely on the work place technology to help us out. I hope this gave you a brief overview of the idea behind technical and professional communication.

Sincerely, Chandler
