Laws, Policies, and Ethics

Every day we log on to our alternate social life known as social media. During our days as we post and search through our social media account how often do you think about the legal terms that go into your social media. Many times when we create a new social media accounts or have an update we just agree to that super long list of terms and conditions without ever knowing what they mean. I know that I am one of those people who just clicks accept without ever thinking twice. Most of the time these terms and policies are there to protect us. But have you ever thought about what that allows the social media companies to do with your information and post. Copyrighting is a huge part of those legal terms that you agree to. Many of the companies do not stand for copyrighting as it is not right to claim someone’s work as your own. One social media that I found very interesting was YouTube and how it does not really protect you from copyright issues. YouTube allows you to use there cite and post what you want, but once it is on there it they do not help to prevent copyrighting. They have it so the owner of the video is in charge of what happens to the video once it has been uploaded. There have been many people who have been upset by this, as they feel that YouTube should do a better job in securing someone’s video.

Next I want to talk about Ethics. Now that social media has become so popular across the nation many jobs have started to look through social media accounts when they are looking to hire new employees. This is where your ethics come into play, it is very important to make sure your social media accounts are clean and presentable when someone who may potentially hire you is looking through you profile. I have heard many stories where people have inappropriate things on their social media, which has lead to the termination at the company. The sad part is now days it is almost popular to have inappropriate material on your social media. It seems to be what gets you the most likes and followers. I find this so sad that the people who post bad things or inappropriate things are the people who are considered "popular" on social media. Having good ethics inside and outside of your social media is what is going to get you furthest in life.

Collaborative and Interactive Platforms

Social media has always been something that is interactive between users. In recent years media has made a turn for the better by making social media personally interactive. They have done this by doing live videos where people can get on and see what you are doing. I think this a really cool tool that has been created many people have used this for the benefit of marketing. Many people like to see your company or what you do in the moment and how things really run. Now this is such an amazing tool but there are negatives to it as well. People have started to get immune to the idea of being able to see a video with the product they are watching. The companies who are behind the curve on live video are loosing out on potential consumers. According to Samantha Furgeson “Consumers now expect so see video as part of the mix of content you present when they visit your website”.
As someone who is very interested in starting there own company I am very happy to learn of such a tool as Interactive Media. This tool can really help you to expand in the world of business. Other then business the use of interactive media has been very helpful for people in the Q & A industry. For example on the campus on Utah State there are many different staff members who are able to live video chat sessions. I have had to do this before with the writing center. I do have to admit that it was very helpful. There are many times where we as people are not able to make it somewhere, with the use of interactive media we are able to chat live from different parts of the world. I think this is so easy and helpful for all of us if used correctly.
Before learning about this topic I have been very annoyed with the use of Interactive media. The reason that I say that is all social media’s seemed to come out with this tool at the same time. Everyone got so excited about being able to put there live videos on social media that it became very annoying. There are times were I truly don’t care to see what someone is doing and it is all over my feed. In my opinion there should be certain limitations as to what you are able to post on your live media

Location Based Platforms

In simple terms Location Based Platforms is a website or social media platform that allows companies to reach out to there local customers, as well as gives companies information as to where most of there consumers come from. In class we have talked about Facebook and how they will have access to your microphone. With Facebook having access to your microphone they will listen to what you are talking about and tailor ads to match what you talk about. I find this so crazy that many companies are able to look at your searches or what pictures you like and you will start to see ads matching up to what you are interested in. This is one of the coolest/scariest marketing tools out there. I say how cool it is because they will send ads that you are interested in. Which could benefit both you "the consumer" and them "the Company". You might have not found that ad with out them having access to your location preferences. Now it is a little scary because we have to really think about how much privacy do we really have. If social media is able to look up and listen to what you are saying, it makes you think what else they are looking through.

These apps are not all scary in my first paragraph I made Location Based Platforms sound a little uneasy. But that is not all true, some location-based platforms are used to communicate and interact with people who are around you. For example that app Swarm allows you to look at who is around you and see what they are doing so you can go and join them. Another interactive app is Pokémon Go, this is a very interactive app where you move around and collect Pokémon with you phone. This app is very cool because it takes you location of the real world and turns it into a video game. As people are out in about you are able to see them while they are playing the game.

In my opinion location based platforms are very cool. There are so many different ways that they can be used. Lots of the time they are used in games such as the ones that I talked about in my second paragraph. But there are times when the company can have access to your microphones or searches and use that as a way to advertise there products to you. Now I’m sure lots of people think how scary it is that the company can access your information. But they use it in a good way to try and see there consumers and what people are interested in.
