Dear Cousin,
It has been
brought to my attention that you are not familiar with the subject matter of
technical and professional communications. I am here today to help clear up any
misunderstandings that you may have. First by going through technical communications
and then finishing up with professional communications. My hope with this
letter is to give you a brief and better understanding of technical and
professional communications.
To start
off we will cover the basics of Technical communication. Technical
communication “is a means to convey scientific, engineering, or other technical
information.” Basically stating that people of the technical communications
field communicate on a technology based level. Whether that be through computer
based writings, texts, emails Etc.. This type of communication is used more in
a business setting dealing with more specialized topics or instructions. An
easy way to think of it is instructions, for example when you buy a desk from
Ikea, the instructions given to you is a perfect example of technical
communication. Where there is still communication but it is not given to you in
face-to-face communication.
Second we
will cover the topic of Professional communication. In simple terms
professional communication is used in a work place setting, meaning that
written oral and visual communication is all used. I like to think of this
almost as open communications where all types are used to communicate. In my
opinion this is one of the most important ways that we as humans interact with
one another. We all interact with each other in different ways and professional
communications seems to be the dominant way of communication. Professional
communication is said to be one of the most important skills successful people
bring to the table. I bring this up to you, because I know that you are on a
righteous path of success and I want you to learn all that you can to better
your self. Professional communications is a way where people with power are
able to take action and guide you to think and believe the way they do. For
example sales men are very good in face-to-face professional communications. They
are able to make you believe and be interested in what they have to sell.
In closing
I just want to say that Technical Communication and Professional communication are
very closely related. Professional is based more around the idea of strategy
and the theory of learning and persuading. Technological communication is more
in the work field where we as humans are not communication as much in person
and we rely on the work place technology to help us out. I hope this gave you a
brief overview of the idea behind technical and professional communication.
Sincerely, Chandler

I really liked that you addressed both technical communication as well as professional communication and told definitions for each. I also really liked that you included examples for each, making it easier to understand and relate to what each of them are. By talking about how each is different and then concluding by explaining how they are related, I felt I had a good understanding of each topic by the end. Great job!

ReplyDeleteLike Kaylee, I also enjoy how you organized your letter. I think the content is very informative and easy to understand, and you do a great job simplifying the jargon into something a layperson can easily understand. I did notice that in your opening paragraph you refer to the field as 'communications' with an 's,' something that might mislead your reader. I would recommend writing it as 'communication' as we discussed in class to reduce confusion for those who know the difference between the two. I also noticed you had heavy repetition of a couple of words (e.g. 'Basically stating that people of the technical communications field communicate on a technology based level,' where you use the words 'basic,' 'technology,' and 'communications' two times each in the same sentence.). Other than these minor things, you did an excellent job!
ReplyDeleteChandler you did an amazing job. I really like your examples for technical and professional communication. The instructions for the desk from Ikea and the door to door salesman example. Once your cousin reads this letter they will have a great understanding of technical and professional communication. Great job.
